Weather

Playa del Carmen has a sub-tropical climate. It is humid and hot most days of the year. Average annual temperatures are in the range of 27C or 80F. All year around the humidity level is very high, and can easily reach 90 per cent. The weather is quite reliable, but when the seasons change it can be a little unpredictable.

February to May: The spring time temperatures are just ideal! There is very little rain and the ocean starts to get more calm. The afternoons get really hot but the evening breeze is really refreshing at this time of year.

June to August: Summers are HOT! This is also the time when the ocean is at its most beautiful. The water is so warm you can stay in for hours. Blue skies prevail. Rainfall is seen, usually as short heavy afternoon showers after a hot day. There are some thunder storms during this time of year, but last for very short periods of time. Nights are hot and the best time to be out and about; if not in the cool fresh water cenotes cooling off during the day!

September to October: This is the time of year when tropical storms and hurricanes can form, after the intense, hot summers. We do not get hurricanes every year and there is no way of guarantee. In October 2008 Playa received almost and entire month of rain! Despite the rain, the weather is still warm.

November to January: Winter months are the coolest months here, which means it's very comfortable. Rain is possible but not common at this time of year. When the northern winds reach Playa it can get quite cold even though its very sunny.

Exchange Rates

The currency in Mexico is the Peso ($). Due to the large influx of foreign investment and tourism, the US Dollar ($) is widely accepted. Always double check your change and make sure that you ask at what rate they convert the dollar for that day.

The exchange rates are the best at the banks but certain banks have a limit on changing dollars for people without bank accounts. Most banks also do not change any other currency than US Dollar, so use the exchange kiosks that can be found all over Playa del Carmen.

Flight Schedules

Cancún International Airport (IATA: CUN, ICAO: MMUN) is approximately 1 hour north of Playa del Carmen.

It is Mexico's second busiest airport, after Mexico City International Airport in Mexico City. In 2006, the airport handled 9,728,149 passengers. In 2007, that number grew to 11,340,027 passengers, setting a new record! It finished 2008 with 12,380,000 passengers. It is currently the 5th busiest airport in Latin America!

Major international airlines as well as charter airlines have direct or connecting flights to Cancun every day.
